Subtitles, not dubbing

Many video translators dub. This one writes. Here's what you get.

  • Subtitle files. The translation downloads as SRT or VTT, timed to the video, to add in your player, editor or YouTube.
  • The text beside the original. Read every line in both languages with who said it, and correct any of them.
  • No new voice. No dubbing, voice cloning or lip sync, and no new video file. Your video and its sound stay as they are.
  • No burned-in subtitles. You get the file; your editor or player puts it on screen.

How to translate a video to English

Sometimes YouTube can do it for you. Here's when it can't.

  • The video has captions and you only want to watch it? YouTube's own auto-translate can show those captions in another language. You don't need us for that.
  • No captions, or you need a file? Paste the link here. We transcribe the audio itself, so captions don't matter, and you get the translation as text and as SRT or VTT. Only need the words in the video's own language? Use the YouTube transcript generator.
  • You need it right? Correct the transcript and the translation before you download, then upload the file in YouTube Studio.

Compare plans

  • Live Translate, where the iPhone app speaks a face-to-face conversation between two languages out loud, needs a paid plan, as do custom vocabulary and background noise removal.
  • Translated subtitles have one caption per line of the transcript, up to about 30 words, without speaker names. The line-length and caption-length settings apply to the original-language subtitles only.
  • Translation is counted in characters of the transcript, not in minutes. Free includes 20,000 a month, about 20 minutes of English speech.
  • Edits after translating don't change a translation you already made. Fix the transcript first, or translate again.

How do I translate a video to English?

Sign up free, paste the video's link or upload the file, and pick the spoken language. When the transcript is ready, open Translate and choose English. Download the English as SRT or VTT subtitles, or as text.

Can I translate a YouTube video without captions?

Yes. We transcribe the audio, not YouTube's captions, so a video without captions works the same. Paste the link of one video; live streams don't work.

Does it dub the video or change the voice?

No. You get subtitle files and text. We don't dub, clone voices, sync lips or make a new video, and your video's sound stays as it is.

Can it burn the subtitles into the video?

No. You download an SRT or VTT file, and your video editor, player or YouTube puts it on screen.

Is it free?

Yes, on the Free plan: 30 min of transcription a month (up to 15 min a day, videos and links up to 15 min) and 20,000 translation characters, with no card. For longer videos, compare plans.

How much can I translate on each plan?

Free 20,000, Starter 500,000, Premium 2,000,000 and Pro 10,000,000 characters a month, counted on the transcript you translate. The allowance resets each month.

Which languages can I translate a video into?

Any of 99+ languages, from any of the 99+ we transcribe. The languages page lists both.

Are the subtitles perfectly timed?

Each caption carries the time of its line in the transcript, so it appears with the speech. Lines can be long, up to about 30 words, so for short on-screen captions you may want to split some in your editor.

How good is the translation?

It's machine translation, so treat it as a draft. You can correct any line before you download. There's no human or certified translation.
