A real transcript, ready to read

Here is NASA's Apollo 11 landing as PrismaScribe transcribed it, in the Word download: who is talking above their words, and the minute and second each line begins. Your voice message comes back in the same shape, with one name or several, and the TXT file carries the same lines as plain text.

Once the voice note is text

A four-minute message becomes something you can skim in twenty seconds.

  • Reply without replaying. Read the whole message at your own pace, copy the sentence you're answering and paste it into your reply.
  • Find it again later. The address, the time, the name of the doctor: search your transcripts instead of scrolling back through a chat full of audio.
  • Understand another language. A message from a colleague in Milan or a relative in Lisbon? Translate the transcript and read it in yours.
  • Turn a long note into a short list. Ask for a summary of a rambling update, so the three things that matter sit at the top.
  • Keep the important ones. Voice notes from a client, a teacher or a family member stay in your library with their audio, sorted into folders if you like.
  • Pass it on as text. Share the transcript with someone who can't listen right now, or download it as a document for your records.

From the chat to a file

What WhatsApp hands you when you save a voice message, and what you take away.

WhatsApp voice messages, the files you upload

WhatsApp records voice messages with the Opus codec, made for speech, so even a long note is a small file. Saved from a phone it is usually an .opus file; downloaded from WhatsApp Web or the desktop app, usually an .ogg. Both upload as they are, with no converting or renaming.

Saved on iPhone or Android
Usually .opus
Downloaded from WhatsApp Web
Usually .ogg
Longest voice message
15 min on Free, 5 hr on Starter and Premium, 8 hr 20 min on Pro
Language of the message
Any of 99+ languages, detected for you

OPUS and OGG are on the uploader's own list. WhatsApp can change how it names saved files. WhatsApp is a trademark of WhatsApp LLC; PrismaScribe isn't affiliated with WhatsApp.

TXT and Word, the files you keep

TXT is plain text for any phone or computer: a short header with the file's name, language, length and date, then the transcript, with a name and a [m:ss] time on each line if you leave them on. Word (DOCX) is the same text as a document you can edit, print or attach.

Several voices
Told apart, up to 32, and renamed by you
Options
Speaker names and timestamps, each on or off
Also downloads as
PDF, Markdown, SRT and VTT
Your corrections
In every file you download

The options are the web app's export window, the same for every format of text.

What it doesn't do

So you know before you start.

  • No access to your chats. PrismaScribe never connects to WhatsApp and can't read your messages. You choose which voice note to save and upload.
  • No sharing straight from the chat. There is no PrismaScribe button in WhatsApp's share menu. Save the voice message as a file first.
  • Upload on the website. The iPhone app's file picker doesn't open .opus files yet. Upload voice messages here, in your phone's browser or on a computer.
  • No links to messages. A voice message has no public page to import from, so the link field isn't offered here.

Good to know

Compare plans

  • Background noise removal and custom vocabulary need a paid plan. Noise removal counts as 2× the minutes and custom vocabulary as 1.25×.
  • Free gives you 30 min a month, up to 15 min a day, one voice message at a time.
  • On Free, a web upload longer than 15 min is transcribed up to its first 15 min.
  • Top-up hours lift Free's daily and per-file time limits. The 500 MB file size stays.
  • YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and WhatsApp are trademarks of their owners. PrismaScribe isn't affiliated with them.

WhatsApp voice message to text FAQ

More questions? Write to hello@prismascribe.ai.

How do I convert a WhatsApp voice message to text?

Save the voice message as a file (press and hold it, then share or forward it to your files), sign up free and upload the file here. Leave the language on detect and start. When the transcript is ready, read it, click any word to fix it, and copy the text or download it. You can close the page while it works; an email tells you when it's done.

WhatsApp can transcribe voice messages itself. Why upload one?

If WhatsApp's own transcript works for you, use it. Upload when it doesn't offer your language on your phone, when you want the words as a file to keep, search or forward, when the note is long or has several voices, or when you need it in another language. PrismaScribe transcribes any of 99+ languages on any phone, because the file is transcribed here and not on the phone.

Can I get a WhatsApp voice message as text in German?

Yes. German is one of 99+ languages, on an iPhone, an Android phone or a computer alike. Leave the language on detect or pick German before you start. The same goes for Italian, Polish, Turkish or any other language on the list, and for a message that switches between two.

How do I save a WhatsApp voice message on my iPhone?

Press and hold the voice message, tap Forward, then the share button at the bottom, and choose Save to Files. Then open this page in Safari and upload it from Files, or AirDrop it to your Mac and upload it there. The file is usually an .opus, which uploads as it is.

How do I save a voice message on Android or from WhatsApp Web?

On Android, press and hold the voice message, tap Share and save it to your files or to Drive, or send it to yourself by email. In WhatsApp Web or the desktop app, point at the voice message, open its menu and choose Download. Phones usually save an .opus file and WhatsApp Web an .ogg; OGG to text has more on the format.

Is it free?

Yes, on the Free plan, with no card: 30 min of transcription a month, up to 15 min a day, for voice messages up to 15 min long, one at a time. Every download comes with Free. For longer messages or many a day, compare the plans or buy top-up hours that never expire.

How long can a voice message be?

Up to 15 min on Free, 5 hr on Starter and Premium, and 8 hr 20 min on Pro. Voice messages are small files, so their length is the limit you meet, never the file size. On Free, a longer web upload is transcribed up to its first 15 min.

Can I translate a voice message?

Yes. Transcribe it in the language it was spoken, then translate the transcript into any of 99+ languages. Read the translation in your dashboard beside the original, or download it as TXT, SRT or VTT. Free includes 20,000 characters of translation a month. Translate audio.

What if a voice message has more than one person speaking?

Each voice is told apart, up to 32, as Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on. Rename them once and every line follows. Handy for a recorded call or a conversation someone forwarded to you. How speaker identification works.

What about voice memos and other recordings?

They work the same way. iPhone Voice Memos, Telegram voice notes and other recorders' files have their own guide on voice memo to text, and any other recording goes through audio to text.

Read the next long voice message instead of listening to it twice.
