OGV, the Ogg video you upload
An .ogv is Ogg video: usually Theora pictures with Vorbis sound inside an Ogg container, formats made by the Xiph.Org Foundation. Wikimedia Commons keeps its video as WebM or Ogg Theora, and older Linux screen recorders such as recordMyDesktop save .ogv. The uploader takes OGV files by their extension. Only the spoken sound is transcribed.

What it doesn't do
A few points before you upload Ogg video.
- No OGV in the iPhone app. Its file picker can't choose an OGV. Use the website in your phone's browser or on a computer.
- No .oga files. Ogg sound saved as .oga isn't taken. Save it as OGG or MP3; an ordinary .ogg uploads as it is, see OGG to text.
- No on-screen text. Terminal output, menus and captions shown in a screencast aren't transcribed; only the narration is.
- No video in the dashboard player. Next to the transcript you hear the OGV's sound; the picture isn't shown.
- PDF limited to Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters. For other scripts, download Word, TXT, Markdown, SRT or VTT.
Good to know
- Background noise removal and custom vocabulary are available on a paid plan. Noise removal takes 2× the minutes, custom vocabulary 1.25×.
- Free covers 30 min a month, a daily ceiling of 15 min, one OGV transcribing at a time.
- If an OGV you upload on Free runs longer than 15 min, the first 15 min of it is transcribed.
- With top-up hours, Free loses its daily and per-file time limits; the 500 MB size limit stays in place.

How do I convert an OGV file to text?
Sign up for free and upload the OGV on the website. Choose its language or leave it on detect and press start. An email lets you know when the transcript is done, so you can leave the page. Correct any word by clicking it and download Word, TXT or PDF, or copy the text.
What is an OGV file?
Video in the Ogg container from the Xiph.Org Foundation, usually Theora for the picture and Vorbis for the sound. The .ogv ending marks it as video; Ogg files with sound only usually end in .ogg.
Where do OGV files come from?
Mostly two places: Wikimedia Commons, which stores video as WebM or Ogg Theora, and older Linux screen recorders like recordMyDesktop, which save .ogv.
My Ogg file has no picture. Which page do I need?
An Ogg file holding only sound is usually .ogg, and it uploads the same way; see OGG to text. If it's saved as .oga, save it again as OGG or MP3 first, as .oga isn't one of the extensions we take.
Can I upload an OGV from the PrismaScribe iPhone app?
No, the app's picker can't select OGV files. Open the website in a browser on the phone, or on a computer, and upload it there.
Is transcribing an OGV free?
On Free it is, with no card: 30 min a month, up to 15 min a day, files of at most 15 min and 500 MB, one at a time, all downloads included. For longer videos, compare the plans or add top-up hours that don't run out.
Can I save the transcript in Word?
Yes. Word (DOCX) is among six downloads, alongside TXT, PDF, Markdown, SRT and VTT, and each lets you keep or drop speaker names and timestamps. PDF supports Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters; for other scripts choose Word or TXT.
Are different speakers labelled?
Yes, on all plans, up to 32 speakers, labelled Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and onward. Type a real name once and it replaces the label everywhere. About speaker identification.
What if the video isn't in English?
Speech in any of 99+ can be transcribed, with the language set by you or detected. You can also translate the result into any of 99+ languages. Translate video.
